Update on two old posts & a plug (non-thirdgen)
I got the Shoebox back on the road yesterday, results of a couple of questions finally in. I haven't had it to the track yet, but did do a couple of "on-ramp test runs", as well as cruise and stop-and-go.
First, the orginal at https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/...ML/001528.html about the burnt TH400 clutches and band. I put the check ***** back where TCI said to put them. It shifts great, either auto or manual shifting, doesn't slip in 3rd. It's never felt better.
Second, orginal post at https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/...ML/001993.html about what shifter to use. I went with the Light Truck MegaShifter. I have it almost all the way up, so "normal" shifters would have had me bent over - glad I made that choice. It is normal-gate from park to drive, easy to use on the street; ratchet from drive to first both ways. I need more practice with the ratchet, but it seems pretty natural already (find myself thinking that's the way the Camaro shifts, too).
Finally, the plug: I filled the tranny with AMSOIL's new "Super Shift" fluid. It is full synthetic without the friction modifiers. They don't recommend it for the street because of harsh shifting. However, since it only took seven quarts to fill after the rebuild, I still have some "normal" fluid in it (AMSOIL synthetic ATF, of course) that was left in the converter, which is higher-than-stock stall. The shifts are very firm and precise, but not harse, either around town or WOT. If you want a fluid that gives you firm shifts and the protection of a synthetic base, I'd highly recommend this product - especially for racing.

send me a case or two of amsoil so i can plug it too. i can't believe the amount of times i do recommend a product on here by name. i'm not sure if anyone listens or not but i'd guess from a few of the e mails i get someone does.
