Re: what rear end? need help
The '82 has the 7.5 10 bolt with 26 spline axles. It comes stock with a standard differential, but could be ordered with a limited slip differential (posi). The RPO decal will tell you if your car came with the posi or not, but if the rear end has been changed then you won't know what is in it. Many of these cars came with the Governor Lock differential, which isn't the best for high performance use. They have a lot of small parts that can break easily. The Auburn was also used in some of them. The best in my opinion is the Eaton posi. They were not offered in the '82 and later Camaro, but were used in the '60s and '70s Chevy muscle cars. You can get a new 26 spline Eaton posi for $427 that will fit your car. Another $30 will get you the bearings and shims for it. You must know what gears are in your rear end before changing anything in it.
