I'm getting noise from my rear end. It's a whining noise. When I'm driving and let off the accelerator it dies down but once I press the accelerato again it whines. My car is a 1988 GTA Notchback.

How's the rear axle fluid level? Has it been changed lately? Do you have a posi (and therefore need to put the special additive in when you do a rear fluid change)?

I guess I should check the level. I'm pretty sure it's posi. The guy I got the car from just did not take care of it

If there was a higher rear end gear put in the car it will do that. I have 3.73's and it does that.

Pull the cover and look for metal shavings
in the bottom of the housing.
Also look at the ring and pinion teeth for
pitting or darkish heat marks.
If you don't find anything, forget about it.
Excessive wear or improper tooth contact during a gear change will do that.

There is nothing you can do about it now.
Either get a new gearset or live with it.
Do not try and re-shim the rear end to change the gear contact!! It will make it worse or cause a total failure.
Turn up the volume on the stereo and enjoy your car!!!!
