really dumb question, how many gears do i have

i just bought this car from a lot a few months ago, and i am still trying to decifer this transmission. the shifter plate on it says:
1 2 D OD N R P
is this considered a 4 speed or 3 speed. also, what transmission is it? it is an 82 berlinetta, but i dont think it is a 200c because it has overdrive
thanks

Sounds like someone installed a 700R4 into your car and also put in the proper shifter and shift indicator.

Yes, it is a 700-R4. This is a overdrive 4 speed with lock-up torque converter.

Assuming it isn't the stock tranny, it may be a 2004R which would be an easier swap.... But most likely a 700R4.

The 700R4's oil pan is pretty much rectangular while the 2004R's is very odd shaped and looks kinda like it has two seperate pans.

Either way... Yes a 4 speed

Maybe the shifter broke and they installed a later model shifter(it still would have the th200c). Shift it through every gear one by one to check. Just another possibility, people do dumb stuff everyday.

Isn't the OD, or 4th gear, a gear in itself with a .70 ratio? If so, that would make 4 gears.

The difference between a 3 speed and a four speed is that both planetarys are not joined on the same shaft like the 3 speed, so therefore it is a whole different gearing so I guess it's a 4 speed.

'overdriven or not' it has 4 different gear ratios's from input shaft to output shaft, so it's a 4 speed.
