Positrac rear end
Positrac rear end
I am upgrading my 89 RS from a 2.8 v6 to a chevy 350.. i am using a 350 turbo tranny with the new motor, as opposed to the 700r i have now.. i want a positrac rear end so im not constantly turning one tire over.. i have been told that i can weld something to convert my rear ends... this sounds odd to me. I know close to nothing about rear ends, so any help or explanations would be much appreciated.

Welding the spider gears will lock it up, but it will be permanent. If you don't ever turn, this might work. I would put a powertrax locker in it.

I have seen on www.slponline.com that they are selling the O.E.M. Zexel-Torsen Diff. from stock 4th gen. z28s for $74.95!!! They say that they will work on 89 & up f-bodies. My question with that is are they 2 or 3 series carriers? And are they posi? Aren't the 2.73s 3 series carriers? I don't know.
I am thinking about getting one and having a shop put it in and then changing the gear to 3.42 and they can change the speedo gear to.
Does anyone know, or has anyone used this diff?

JoelOL75,
The ones from SLP are 3 series? And are they posi? Have you used one? That means I have to use new gears right? The 2.73 is a 2 series?
Tell me more!

Yes, you need new gears and possibly new axles because some 89's had 26 spline axles and some had 28. I wish there was a cut and dry way to help you, but you have to pull 'em and count 'em to be sure.
You need to use at least 3.23 gears or numerically higher.
4.10's will work, but the c-clip retainer can't be inserted because the gear teeth are in the way. Sure you could grind on gears or the 'paddle' retainer to make it fit, but SLP sells a split retainer for 4.10's. The right way to do it if you want to get this radical
Yes it is a 'posi' I suppose, but it works much different than any other design using worm gears to bias the torque to both wheels. Advantanges are easier cornering under power, lasts the life of the car (No clutches to burn out)
Disadvantages are they arn't recommended for severe shock loading (Drag racing with slicks) but street duty is A-OK.
Here's the whole deal on the torsen diff:
