Is the axle code always on the tube???

A friend and I both stared at the rear axle housing on my 88Camaro SC for about 30 minutes.

The only markings we could find were csat on the hogs head.

We looked at the front and rear of the axle tubes on both the driver and passenger side.

I am trying to determine if my late 1988 model run SC has a 28 spline axle.

Here is what I found on the hogs head.
Does this mean anything

Those suckers are hidden! All the rust & grime makes them hard to see.. they're stamped in, and not cast in. To find mine, I wire brushed the heck out of the front of the passenger side tube. Then, I wet my finger, and ran it across the area... the numbers showed up.

You're not alone guys! I was working under the car a while back, and I decided to look for the code. I wire brushed and nothing. I didn't wet the area though. That'll probably do the trick.

I've got a 92RS,305tbi,auto. What I've read say's that my car is equipped with the 2.73 POSI. Should I trust the info or check to see if it's got the 3.23std?

One more question. Could the code rust to the point where it would disappear if wire brushed?

On your year car I doubt the rust could already make it disappear. I have an '83 Z28 and even mine is still there. Just look a tiny bit harder.

I am looking for the same thing as you and I have the exact same stock setup as you. Where should i look for the numbers and what determines if it is a 28 spline axle because i was told it would be a 26 spline.

Thanks
