no gears????? what happened

driving down the highway the other day, get off on off ramp by my house and stop at a stop sign, start to drive away and the engine starts to rev higher then it seemed like the tranny completely let go, no forward motion at all , so i pull off road, put it in any gear but no go, no reverse,or forward gears, does anyone know what would cause this??it is in an 88 Iroc, with a 700r4, the tranny had a bit of a slip going into second before this happened. please help

Sounds like you lost all fluid pressure, maybe the pump bought the farm.

got the tranny looked at by my local mechanic after i pulled it, it turns out that the torque converter started to let go and the pump went with it, so the tranny mechanic by me fixed it, new TC,pump,1-2 clutches,2-3 clutches, reverse something or other, and labour cost me 800$ canadian
