Any ideas why i lost 4th gear....for just awhile?

I went out got in my car and started driving, well it wouldnt go into forth gear. So it would be like 3000 rpms at about 40 miles an hour. Drove for about 5 miles shut off, went into mcdonalds came back out and started driving and everything was alright. What could the problem be, it didnt change by putting it in drive or manually shifting through the gears. When it did shift, all the shifts were firm. Oh yea, its a 1986 700r4.

thanks

Thats wierd becasue the same thing happened to a chevy pickup we got at work, we were pulling a 24 footer and it was getting really hot (chevy diesel) and it just shifted out of 4th and wouldnt go back in, we stopped for about 10 minutes to let it cool off and it shifted back into fourth, im guessing it was probably the 4l80 ttranny or 60
