700R4 rebuild questions

Hi, I've done alot of reading & researching of posts on here as well as other trans websites & found the usual many different opinions. This is probably the most asked question...so may as well ask it again...sorry!
My 700 has the usual no 3rd or 4th gear as of late last fall. I'm going to do a complete rebuild & want to go through & do everything to make it as bullet proof as possible. Here is the basic specs on the car...1989 IROC, 5.7L,owned since new,73,000km (approx 40,000 miles) meticulously maintained.Crane cam, headers, heads ported/polished etc,Superam upper & lower intake,52mm TB,Walbro 255lph fuel pump,TCS Prolocker 9" converter 2800 stall,Dana 44 rearend 3:54 gears,Procharger D-1SC running 8-9 PSI boost,24LB injectors, and bone stock chip. I'm guessing the HP & torque is in the 450-500 area.Ran it once last year with the new blower & ran a best of 12.70 @109 with full exhaust & only slicks. A couple months later 3rd & 4th went...didn't like the blower I guess!

I was looking at Probuilt's website and not sure if I should go with the Pro Street kit or the Pro Street Elite kit? One other thing is that, in the future, I may build another motor for it. If I do, it will have to be 600-700 HP to make it worthwhile...BUT, that may or may not happen & not for quite awhile I'm thinking. If I can get it in the 11's with a few more tweaks,I may just leave it.
I've read alot of good things about the Probuilt stuff. I also was looking at these guys http://www.transmissioncenter.net/highperflist.htm not to sure about them?
Also, do I need to buy the Transgo Elite shift kit if I get either of those other rebuild kits or does the Elite kit come with the shift kit? Is cyro the output shaft (or any other parts) necessary for my current set up?
It's a street car but does get raced a fair bit. I just want to make sure I get everything I need & do it right the first time. I have been a tech at a GM dealer for 20 years (don't do the trans stuff so I will have the trans guy help me) but do have all the access to GM parts, info etc etc. Any OEM GM parts I may need or should get as well?

Thanks for any advice/help...and again, sorry for what is probably a very repetitive question!

Steve

Re: 700R4 rebuild questions

call dana at probuilt hell steer you in the right direction. Id say from your description the prostreet elite kit will do it. It comes with everything youll ever need to put in it but dont forget to get a new reverse input drum and separator plate and youll be fine. That comes with the shift kit and everything else and you probably more than likely dont need the output shaft cryoed.

Re: 700R4 rebuild questions

I prefer a jet servo for second gear-it has 98% more holding power than stock, and 63% more than a corvette servo. It makes second firmer and hold more power, third firmer and faster because the spring inside the servo is no longer there. (tci makes the same one). if you can't find the jet one. Get a fourth cover and piston to complete the servo install as it has 40% more hold power for fourth gear.
A crazy kit isn't needed. Just upgrade the 3-4 clutch pack with kolene steels and 8or9 friction and save your money. Use a 4l60e high energy band (they are probably laying all over your dealership and are a dark color)
Use the transgo 2-3 shift kit and maximize all the hole sizes in your stock separator plate.NOTE:i'd buy the jr kit also to use the upgraded t.v. valve but throw the rest in the garbage. Follow all the 2-3 instructions.
A beast reaction shell is a must
, as is a bigger boost valve in the pump .5 or larger, and tci sells a .4 for int/rev.. both go in the same hole in the pump
comments welcome/take me to school

Re: 700R4 rebuild questions

So does the Pro Street Elite kit come with more of a TransGo shift kit then the Pro Street kit? Elite kit says "TransGo Performance shift kit with all of the updates" and the Pro street kit says "TransGo performance shift kit w/accumulation for nice part throttle shifts".

The Elite kit also says it comes with a "new TransGo separator plate predrilled to match your setup" ...so the reverse input drum might be the only other piece I might need to get? Probably some other misc small stuff?

Is it worthwhile changing to the deeper pan?

I'm also going to e-mail Dana at Porbuilt on there website...just looking for opinions & suggestions here as well.

Thanks again

Re: 700R4 rebuild questions

hate to mention it but you said porbuilt. what a conundrum.
I say save the money and do a 2-3 kit yourself. if transgo needed to change the kit they would.
pan no-add a trans cooler but make sure not to eliminate the radiator.
I'd stick with a 2-3 kit and forget about the accumulation because you won't even feel it with a high stall torque converter. with a stock converter yes-but you no stocky.
