Vibration

Hi guys
I just got my camaro together and put the engine back in. I never took out the transmission just motor and driveshaft. I updated the motor with ported heads and cam change and while I was at ported the intake. I removed my drivshaft to change u-joints because I had a slight vibration last fall. After my recent changes this spring it seems to be worse. My driveshaft is steel and the vibration is the worst between 70 and 100 mile per hour. I am just unsure of what to try next and could it be an out of balance driveshaft? Should I go to aluminum? Thanks for your input. Dennis

Go with an aluminum driveshaft, they are specifically made for high performance and are held to tighter tolerances during the manufacturing process. I purchased mine from James C. in Kansas, he is a class act! Watch the classifieds for one of his ads and email him with your request, if interested.

Good luck and enjoy!!

yep that 70-100 hits home. "same problem same speeds as you" Its the driveshaft! Get it highspeed ballanced and it will go away.

I had/have the same problem. Getting it balanced was $85 and a used Al one is $120-160.

The balance helped a little, but now that i have 3:73's It won't go away.. well it does around 110 mph and up. Mine is nasty around 80 mph.

You might try, for a temp. fix, turning the d/s over 180*, from the differential side. The steel d/s has a balance weight attached to one side, and sometimes it is just enough to throw the balance out at higher speeds. I had a '78 T/A that I replaced the u-joints and then had a nasty vibration problem. A friend suggested this and it went away!

Hope this helps.

Black Zee,

Many thanks for the plug. I do have an alum shaft from a 90 Camaro. Should anyone be interested, please see my ad in the classifieds.

Read this first.

Check your driveline angle, sometimes a collapsed trans mount will throw things off.

Then go pay $85.00 for the driveshaft to be high speed balanced. They are not balanced for high speed from the factory. The shaft is balanced so it doesn't vibrate at 65 mph.
