1989 Formula 350:

Trans lasted 80,250 miles.
At least 250 drag strip passes and many more public road passes.

Most seem to last 65K to 75K miles. I changed the fluid and filter in mine at 50K, most never change it all.

I know a guy that has 270k on his 700r4 and no problems even the engine is fairly good shape. as long as you take care of them they last a very long time.

88 formula 350:
108,000

88 camaro 2.8
170,000 and still counting... although 2-3 seems a little softer (short slide) than it used to be but no one else notices.

Both abused severly, but maintained.

I have you all best!! If I get a cra with a 700R4 in it I can blow it up in no time flat. My car had a replacent already (193,000Km) and I got another one done at christmas. I got a 2000RPM stall and I got a shift kit and extra clutches put in 3rd and 4th cause the OD went. Last about 6 weeks and then the planetary blew up and spit shavings though everything and wrecked all the new stuff. I had another one out back that I had bought and turned out to be a dud too. I took the planetary out of that and with the 2 trannies I made another good one. Bought another new converter and I have driven this one about 10,000Km. Doesn't work as good as the old one though. My last car had a gm replacement and it started to go so i got it freshened up and it worked fine. I think these trannies SUCK! I would kill for a 4L80E or a T56. I don't even do burnouts!!! I don't know how all you guys get away with what u do to them!

Mine has a vette servo and nothing else. It has about 120,000 miles on it. I am not a very forgiving driver, and it still chirps on 1-2 shift and sometimes 2-3 shift.
Keep it maintained and they do last.

204,500 and still strong. I also, am not an easy driver, (can you say aggressive??? wore out a set of tires in about 20,000 miles that should have lasted 40,000, run it up to the redline in first and second, etc, etc....)

I got my car with about 165,000 on it, and the thing hasn't had an easy life since. I know for sure that it hasn't been apart (engine or trans) and it is still pretty strong.

The only problem I've had with the trans is the typical problem with shifting into third. It would only do it under heavy/full throttle. It has since started working the way it should eveytime now....Go figure!!!

Sounds like your endplay wansn't set correctly. The factory uses a '68' selective washer for about .35" endplay...

On a performace rebuild I usually use a '72' or better washer to bring endplay down to .05" to .00"

The weakest link in the 700's isn't the planetarys. It's not even in the top 4 weakest links so i would suspect something not set correctly.

3 rebuilds and counting.....look for my post "quick question"
I would also kill for a T-56, but not for a 4L80E or any other automatic. I am sick and tired and also very frustrated with automatics.

In my 82 Blazer it went out at 64,000 miles (GM repaired in under warranty). The next time was around 160,000 miles. The fellow that rebuilt it that time asked if I wanted all the heavy duty upgrades (pump, input shaft, bearings, torque converter, etc. that GM had since started using) and I said yes. Cost more for the rebuild but I haven't put enough more miles on it to say it will last longer (it's at 193,000 now). My son's 83Z has 170,000 plus on the odometer and he's put 30,000 of that on it with no breakdowns so far (it has always shifted funny though) and he runs the snot out of it. My 86 IROC has 124,000 on it but I haven't driven it enough to have any problems with it.

I bought my car w/ 58k miles and it was on its second tranny already. 12k miles of my driving and it was time for another. put a used one in w/ a vette servo and it seems relatively tight for now...
