Considering 2004R for my poncho 400 project

Basically, am I on the right track here? I understand it'll stand up to higher levels of horsepower & torque (properly built up), and i'm told it's got the dual bolt pattern that would bolt up to the poncho 400. I'm aware of the different mounts, and I don't want to go with a TH400, as it would take more power to turn it. Anyone have any constructive input for me? Has anyone done this before?

I was contemplating running a 2004R behind my Pontiac 400. I figured that if it could work in turbo buicks, it could work behind a Pontiac. I don't know how true that is though...

In a turbocharged application, it takes time for boost to build up, so the transmission is not being slammed with a huge shot of power all at once. The 400 is a torque monster though, and I think it would kill the 200.

So now, the 400 build is on hold, but I think eventually I'll get an adaptor plate and run a 4L80E behind it. An 80 series transmission is designed to handle a large engine.

I don't see why a 2004R with a performance rebuild from someone reputable wouldn't be able to hold up to a mild 400 for street duty.

Now if it was severly worked up it prolly wouldn't last too long 'cuz them ponchos could really throw out the torque!

I have several 2004R's in back of 400-455 Pontiacs that vary anywhere from high 10's to low 13's and all are holding up fine. Yes, the 2004R with the right torque converter & internal parts will hold up longer to more torque/horsepower than the 700R4. There have been several comparisons tests between the two in low 12 and mid 13 second cars. In the three tests that I am aware of, the 2004R ran an average of one tenth quicker and one mph faster than the 700R4 in the quarter mile. All 3 tests used the same torque converter. (Early 700 input drum had 27 spline, thus the use of the same torque converter. My prices are the same for the 2004R as the 700R4. I do all the latest modifications, including the Gran National servo, Trans-Go Performance Shift kit, .500 main & .296 intermediate/reverse boost valves, hardened stator & sun shell, Teflon bushings in 3 spots, etc. One year warranty includes, TV cable, dipstick tube & stick, 6 quarts of my Pro-Fluid. The same torque converters are offered for the 2004R as the 700R4. If you have any questions about this please call me at 880 7763288 Mon-Sat 11-7 PST.
Glad Too Help!!!

Yes, the 2004R's are available to fit Chevy patterns (multiple bolt pattern).

www.pro-built.net There is a new site coming in about a month. It will be in the same place (address) but with a lot more information, faq's, complete descriptions of what is in the transmissions, shopping cart, etc. The old site is still working.
Hope This Helps!
