What do I need for TKO swap?
First of all I'm looking at a TKO 500 thats in a mustang now... I can use it in my 83 camaro with a different bellhousing and yoke right?
Will I need to get another shifter?
What other parts do I need... Do i need an aftermarket bellhousing? I know I need a crossmember. What about driveshaft? speedo cable? Anything else?

to use that trans you would have to change the input shaft to one made specifically for a 3rd gen.
You need a adapter plate for the t5 bellhousing, a 31 splice ford c6 yoke, wiring pigtails, a aftermarket trans crossmember, and a offset shifter of some kind to move the handle back a little. It ends up about 2" further forward than stock.
All the parts are available from Fortes Parts Connection, google for them and give them a call, I believe he has the adapter for the speedo cable as well. The trans will also have to have the speedo gears setup for whatever rear ration you are using is its different that what the mustang is using.
Everything you need new will cost about 2500 bux, that includes the trans.
Are you sure its a tko500, not an older t3550?

Re: What do I need for TKO swap?
Yeah, you really need to look at the metal tag that's on one of the tailshaft housing bolts so you can figure out exactly which model it is. If it's a 3550 or a TKO, you can make it work with the proper input shaft like 86TA said. Just make sure it's not a 3650. Those came stock in some of the newer Mustangs, and it's a completely different animal from the 3550/TKO units.

You can go to either Forte's Parts Connection or JAM Performance and buy the correct mechanical drive for your speedo. Since the TKO uses a Ford type speedo gear, the adapter they sell has the Ford gear on the trans end and your GM cable screws right onto it. I just checked both sites and it looks like the price has gone up for the speedo adapter, it runs about $95. Here's a link for it at Forte's. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you'll see it. http://www.fortesparts.com/catalogDisplay.cfm?cat=83 Jam Performance has a speedo gear calculator on their site, so you can go there to figure out which driven gear you'll need. The drive gear in the trans has 7 teeth. Here's a link to the calculator. http://www.5speedtransmissions.com/calculators.html

Well apparently the hole where the mechanical drive would plug into has no moving parts in it, so I have to do something with that electrical drive.
Digital dakota has a gew different sendors that I'm not sure if thhey could work or not. any ideas??

Re: What do I need for TKO swap?
So i ended up getting fortes adapter, but its not meshing with the speedo gear inside the tranny. It bight be all chewed up. The guys that worked on it said the speedo sender that was in it (I think for a mustang) had an all chewed up gear. So i guess the plan is take the tail section off and replace the speedo drive gear.
Anybody know how difficult that will be?
