If you use the spohn kit you will only need to have your DS shortened by 2 inches.

What and where do I find a Spohn Kit? I don't mind having to cut the driveshaft. My only fear is the vibration again from a poor cut. And won't the cut make the shaft weaker? Have any price estimates for a cut?

Thanks....

Let's see...Where to find the spohn kit?

Look at the top of this page, on the right, DO you see that little "Spohn performance" banner. click on that and you will be magicly transported to his site. From there you can purchase his swap kit.

If you need the DS shortened make sure you take it to a shop that specializes in driveshafts. They should be able to make it as good as new or better.

O.K. MR. RS! I hear ya LoUd an' ClEAR!!! What do you recommend. Gutting a 93-97 or getting an aftermarket T56? I can get a gutted t56 cheap and I was told the gear ratios in it are better then the aftermarket t56. Then again the aftermarket is pretty much a bolt on.

Anyone have an opinion?

Thanks.....

If you can get a 93-97 for a good price then that is the route I would suggest. At $2300 for a new one I'm thinking they could keep it.

Oh, I was just teasing before. We've all been in a hurry and not looked around. But with these goofballs you need to be prepared for some good natured ribbing.

Welcome to the boards!

No skin off my nose. That is what I was thinking... gutting a 4th gen. Do you know if the gear ratios are different between the two? I have had two people tell me they are. But I don't now earthly idea why they would be.

The best T56 to use is the 1993 close ratio. In 1993 they made a wide ratio and a close ratio. This means that with the close ratio, when you shift you won't lose major RPM's so you win more races! You would sit and smoke with a wide ratio in first gear, the as you shifted to second the car feels like it bogs compared to first gear.

Since when do you have to shorten your driveshaft to install a T56? I've done the swap and used the stock driveshaft. My car was originally an auto, but the steel or alumunim driveshafts in auto or manual third and fourth-gen cars are all the same length and interchangeable. I don't know anyone who had to shorten the driveshaft and I personally know at least three people who have done the swap and multiple others on this board and they have all used stock drive shafts. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. The '93 trans has a 2.97 first gear (if I remember correctly) while the '94-up T56's have a 2.66 first gear. The '93 trans is rated at 400 ft-lbs and the '94-up are rated at 450 ft-lbs. I bought my '96 T56 for $600 with 10,000 miles on it. I bought another with 70,000 miles for $650. There are good deals out there, you just have to find them.

So then the 93 does have a different first gear!! If I want a little more performance I should go with the 93 then huh??

The aftermarket T56 has a longer tailhousing, moving the mount, torque
arm, and driveshaft 1.9" rearwards. The OEM T56 (with the OEM clutch and
bellhousing) has the same exact rear dimension for the torque arm and
driveshaft, so you can reuse the parts. I hope this clarifies things.

2nd 1.94
3rd 1.34

5th 0.63
