In my opinion, get a stock T56. They are a lot cheaper and and everyone I know that can drive these cars fast power shifts third. It is easy to put the trans back into 1st gear after second, but that the only problem. Buy a good shifter and practice at low speeds first. Many a 600 RWHP cars run t56's with no problems. '98-up cars have problems with the hydraulics but those are being remedied. Good luck with the swap.

The coolest thing about the Richmond six-speeds are that they have only one overdrive gear. The stock six speed is just like a five speed (as far as gear ratios are concerned) with a super steep overdrive six gear. The Richmond ones use the extra gear to add another gear between 1st and the 1:1 gear (5th in the Richmond, 4th in the GM).
My Opinion...
If you race it (and can afford it), go with the Richmond...
If you do alot of highway driving (or are on a budget), go with the GM.

get a stock T-56 I have not had any problems out of mine I think alot of what people say is bad about the stock T-56 comes from mistreatment. The biggest thing is to get a pro 5.0 shifter you are garrented not to miss third gear.

Can't you order the Richmond with your own personal gear selections? I remember reading that in Jegs I think. I think the best thing would be to to with the zf (t56) and go with lower rear gears like 4.10 or even lower. You don't NEED the close ratio. The idea of a close ratio is to keep the engine in the powerband. With the good old v8 the powerband is usually really large. Get a 8" balancer and heavy duty everything and you'll enjoy the smooth shifting (more torque) and overal performance. I could see getting a close ratio if you're super hardcore racing but I'd just go with a t56 even then unless.....I had an extra mil to spend on the rest of the car .

I am running a stock 97' T-56 and love it. Even with 4.10's, you finish the 1/4 in 4th. Then you have 5th for normal driving and 6th for the highway. Not a bad, all around deal.
