Transmission & Rear End

I am new to the performance car scene. I recently purchased a 1989 Formula with 305 TPI & 5 Speed. I hear so many people talking about replacment rear ends & engine rebuilds. The car I have has 102,000 miles on it & runs good with no shakes. What can I do to avoid getting a new rear or engine rebuild. This car I have is Bone Factory & runs good but I always hear the term blwing up your rear end & such? Thanks

That comes from abusing the car, as in burnouts, fast starts, drag racing, etc. Drive the car normally, perform the necessary maintanance, and limit the abuse and it'll last for a long time.
