You can't compare two completely different vehicle's and examine one individual part and get any useful data. Gears affect mileage, but not as much as alot of people think. The key part about mileage is efficiency. In some cases mileage can increase with a deeper gear, if the engine runs more efficient at a higher rpm. I like the 3.73's I installed, but both 3.42's and 3.73's will make a huge difference from 2.73's.

would you guys recommend buying a fourth gen rear with 3.42's and a posi and swap it in or just go to slp and get a take off posi and 3.73's and pay somebody to put those in? only thing i dont like about the fourth gen. rear is that it adds 2 inches on either side....will my stock tires come way out of the wheel wells?

i had pretty much the same setup as you. i went with slp's t/o posi, w/ GM Motive 3.73 gears. huge difference. the total for parts and installation was $750. gas is already up around $2.10 for me, i only lost 1-2 mpg after switching from 2.73, but i do a lot of city driving, so overdrive was being used a lot more.

as for the dakota, you really can't compare the gear ratios. not only because of the truck's effeciency, but also because the transmission gears effect what RPM you cruise at, also. our fourth gear is .7:1. you can use the calculators on this site to see how much you're RPM will change.
