350 to 305 transmission swap

I have a 1995 Cevy van with a 350 in it and the transmission has gone out in it and i was wondering if i could replace it with a monte carlo 305 transmission or a cutlass transmission

Re: 350 to 305 transmission swap

not a third gen/ but the 1995 is a 4l60e transmission. it uses a valve body separator plate for one year only so swapping with anything but exactly the same valve body isn't recommended. again it is a one year only transmission. other 4l60e's aren't the same. the front pump might be a non pwm or pwm style pump also. as they used a combo from 93-95 without or with. looking at your pump you could see the pwm markings on it without even removing the pump. they use different wiring harnesses internally in the transmission. if you replace that "one year only" with the wrong build type it won't work. sorry for all the bummer info but that year is very picky.

Re: 350 to 305 transmission swap

i'd rebuild the original one. that way you know that the components match everything. finding a "exact match" for your application probably isn't going to happen easy. I also forgot to mention that the 1995 might use thick or thin steels in the 3-4 clutch pack depending on build date, and also might use a molded 3-4 piston in the bottom of the input drum versus a lip seal type. see an "exact match" is getting harder and harder.
