$545.90

I got took way bad today.

About a Month ago I Went to the dealer to get a bid to put in a zexel Posi, Ring and pinion, And new axles, seals, and bearings. The price was about $250 since I suplied all of the parts. Today I dropped it off, and when I called over to see if it was done they told me 545.90 with tax.. I tell you this because If I had to do it again, My first bid of 250, that they gave me would be writing. And one other thing, Should there be tax on labor?

No tax on labor.

And if you want to get REALLY picky.....did you authorize 545.00 to do the job??

If you weren't told an estimate, and you didn't authorize the work, you technically dont have to pay. Period.

I did an engine job for someone {2500.00) and I didnt give them a written or verbal estimate, they said "just fix it", when they came to pick it up, they acted all surprised and said they didn't want that much work done.

We went to court and the judge said if I didn't give them an estimate, they dont have to pay. They got the car back and a free engine.

I ALWAYS give estimates now.

I would check with your local laws, they might be different, I don't know.

Yea, some states do charge tax on labor. I'm in IL and they don't. But I live about 20 min. from IN and I think they do. It's kinda weird. Like in Chicago, there sales tax is higher than mine, and I'm only about 60 miles away, and in the same state. I dunno. Typical politics I guess. But like Engineboy said (I love that name. Is that anything at all about Indian heritage?) check your local laws.

Some of you who have had the carrier, ring and pinion, and axles swapped, How much was it, and how many hours did it take? I just might eat this one and take it as a learning experience, From now on Im going to have the estimates on paper and Im going to know the name of the guy that gives me the estimate. As for the tax, My Dad owns a readymix company and says he cant charge on labor.

It is a law that a shop can not legally charge you more than 10% of the estimated price whether verbal or written....

Ask any dealership, they have to have it posted on their wall in the service department...

In most states the shop can not go over 110% of the original estimate with out contacting the owner for approval. They also can't do any work not authorized by the owner.

Case in point, I took an alternator in for bearings. The estimate was $25. When the shop called to tell me it was done I went right down to pick it up. That will be $46, please. WTF? I was quoted $25. Well I replaced the brushes while I was there. Did I tell you to do the brushes?, no I didn't. You can take them back out if you want but I'm not paying for brushes. I called the Better business bureau and filed a complaint. That means no govermant contracts for anything untill the issue is satisfactorily(whew! big word) resolved. I had my alternator the next day and only paid the $25, I kept the new brushes.

If you were to file a complaint with the BBB you have a 90% chance of winning. The dealer won't sell any cars, trucks, or service any goverment vechicles if you aren't satisfied after the the claim has been dealt with by the BBB. Trust me that extra $200 isn't worth their goverment contract and a bad report from the BBB.
