Confused about various transmission costs...

What would one expect to pay for a rebuild on a 700-R4? What about to drop a transmission out of one car, and into another? I posted recently about a freshly rebuilt tranny I'm getting out of my friends IROC (I can have it if I pay off the rebuild bill). I went to two shops to get estimates on getting it put in. The place that rebuilt it, charged him $600 for the rebuild, and will pull it back out and install it in my car for $320. Another shop to pull the rebuild out of the IROC, and put it in mine would be $700-750, and when I asked about just rebuilding mine, they quoted my $1400. The huge difference made me wonder. I'm curious if the first shop might just do really half-assed work....or if the second one is just a ream-job. I will note that the cheaper place has a huge transmission shop with about 20 bays...and the expensive place is a small place with 2 bays that does a lot of miscellaneous repairs as well. But still we're talking about a 100% price difference.

Just get some friends, a few floor/tranny jacks, some new converter bolts, some ATF and do it yourself.

Friends that know what they are worth their weight in gold.

I think I'd rather pay the $320 to have it put it. I personally don't really know what I'm doing, and I don't know anybody who's personally done this. My friend's dad could do it, but it'd be totally imposing to ask. Also, you have to lift the engine right?
