Dana 44, 12 Bolt or 9"???

I am going to be building up a 82 Camaro for some heavy street going and a lot of drag racing. I know SLP is selling the Dana for a good price. What I want to know is for those who have any of the rears, what are the advantages and disadvantages of them.

The engine is a 350 and I am probably going to install the Holley Sytemax Heads, cam and intake along with a Demon carb. The tranny is a 700R4 for now. Eventually though, the car will get a T350 and either a Big Block Chevy or, to be a bit different, a 455 Edelbrock headed Pontiac engine. The rear is going to have to survive some ET Street or slick launches.

So, any and all opinion will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

check out www.tomsdifferentials.com . They have some of the most bullet proof rears I know of.

The ford 9" has the advantage of easy center section swaps. So you could drive your car to the track and swap it out to 4.56's or whatever for quicker 1/4's.

Is that about the only advantage the Ford 9" has over the 12 bolt or Dana rearends?..

Just curious.

Dana44 is 8.5" ring gear, Ford is 9" and 12 bolt is 8.875".

The 12 bolt uses different series carriers as the gear ratios decrease. The 9" all fit on the same carrier. You can find a ford posi with 2.50 gears on it and install 4.56 with no problems. There are more gear choices with a 9". It takes a little less HP to turn a 12 bolt.

There are many pro's and con's to each but it all depends on what you want to use it for.

I still run a 7 5/8" 10 bolt in my car. When it finally goes, a 9" will take it's place.

The Dana44 isn't a bad diff. There just isn't as much aftermarket available for it as there is for a 12 bolt or 9".
