converter question

I took my trans in for a check.I was told 2-3 gears were toast and my rebuild wwoyld cost $650(he said it would handle 450-500 hp).I didn't notice any problems before the teardown.Does this sound right? Also I was told that there was no warranty if I used my TCI torque conv.He suggested a GM unit with about 2200 stall. What you think? He comes highly recommended.Opinions? Thanks

As far as no warranty with a TCI, or any other converter for that matter, I don't blame him. Allot can happen to a tranny when a converter lets go (and I am not that big a fan of TCI to begin with). I do have my doubts about a tranny for that price that is to handle that much power. Is this a good friend? Usually, a high price doesn't gauranty you will get a good job but a lowball one makes it difficult to. As for the GM converter, I worked in a Buick dealer for @ 4 years and I NEVER had a GM Reman converter go bad.

Thanks Transfixleo. This is a friend of a friend who owns a small shop. Thanks for the advice on the TC I'll go with the GM for now(Vigalante next maybe). What should a build up cost to handle 450-500 hp? Shouldn't I have noticed SOMETHING if the 2-3 gears were bad?

With a good warranty and proper install plus the converter, expect $15-1800 plus hard parts.
