Whining sound coming from new trans.
Whining sound coming from new trans.
Well,I just came back from the shop(house)where I was getting my tranny rebuilt(3 hour drive both ways)
I was getting it upgraded with a new higher stall conv(supposeadly 2400)Fairbanks billet servo, upshift sleeve, bigger pump, extra clutches etc.and I have 2 main problems.1.when the car is in gear or reverse it makes a loud whine that almost sounds like it has a supercharger. It doesn't make the sound in P or N.Is this the converter? If it is,what about it?The guy who rebuilt it was referred to by a friend, and works by himself out of his garage,he was charging me a lot less then what the shops wanted,is giving me a 12/12 warranty, and I've had bad experiences with my corvettes with them in the past.He had no explanation for the whine,I had to ask him if it could be the conv.and before I came to pick it up didnt hear it
(I dont know how)or DIDN'T think I would. Its a corvette converter that was built from someone else at a shop, and he told me he would speak to the guy tomorrow, meanwhile my car is still there.2.It is shifting a little to early. Before,I had an SLP shift kit,and at WOT it would shift at around 5-5200 rpm with the TV cable pushed all the way in,and adjusting it by pushing my foot on the gas once, and one small click forward. Now,he has the TV cable almost all the way in,and it shifts about 4800rpm.I only had a 1 chance to see where the the 2-3 shift was at,but I think that one was around 5000,so I guess that one is okay. Also,at light throttle before, the 1-2 shift was occuring at around 2-2100rpm,now its at 17-1800.I asked him if its the goveners weights and springs inside, and he is saying its a stretched cable.I told him it was shifting later with the button out more then it is now and he just says its because my cable is stretched.I will probably replace the cable, but I dont think that will cure the problem. The only thing it was doing before was after setting,if I floored it the button would come a little more forward so I put a hose clamp and screw behind it to prevent that.Any help would be greatly appreciated so I don't get a "run around"again.

the whining is most likely the pump not built right, he may have replaced the pump vanes with cheap aftermarket ones, you can't do that on a high perf 700 because they'll break, they need to be genuine GM parts also the slide may be too tight in the pump body. Your shift points may feel different because of the converter but they can still be customized by the governor. It could be the converter too, it sounds like a shady build to me.

Re: Whining sound coming from new trans.
A whine especially with an after market or rebuilt converter is alot of times caused by too much clearance between the converter and the flex plate prior to bolting it on. If so, when you bolt it in, it pulls the converter a little to far off the pump and causes a whine.
The early shifts sound like a TV cable.
Two common problems with a tranny build.
