700 R4 Strength question VERY DUMB?
700 R4 Strength question VERY DUMB?
I don't know much about tranny's but I have been reading about the newer style 700's being better. I thought it was something about the 7 vanes pump and the location of the vanes. If the newer ones are better why can't you just take a pump out of a 4L60E. Are they different?
I told you it was dumb

Flowmaster 3" exhaust
700R4 with 2000 Stall and shift kit 3.42 rearend
Autometer shiftlight tach and B&M mega shifter
One sweet sounding system

Two, dumber.
How do I tell if my tranny is the 87 1/2 model?
How do I upgrade internally to make it like a 1987 1/2 model for strength?

Drop the 3.4 right in the 2.8's place. As for the tranny: it cannot be modded to completly match the newer ones. The case is different. Check this if you didn't already read it.

Joel,
You answer on the engines is NOT EXACTLY 100% correct.
Here is why.
YET, you are correct, in theory.

I've had my set up going for about 4 months now. I've coached about 12 people about this swap.
I can't wait to build a stronger tranny, hopefully soon & within my budget, too!!
Wish you could tell me how to get a great running tranny outta the wrecking yard for less money!
I keep trying to figure it out, instead of learning how to rebuild one of my tranny's.

Wow, I didn't think the 3.4 swap would be that involving besides swapping the short block and heads on and fixing it with some more fuel through higher pressures/new prom work. Good write-up!

Joel,
I love this swap SO MUCH!
It is such a joy to drive.
I have the F41 Suspension package, all the stuff behind the front bumper removed (to lighten by about 100-200lbs), it corners like a rail. As great as my 1974 Corvette.
If you have the chance, I highly recommend it.
This is why I need a stronger tranny.
I can change lanes sideways.
I can leave 50 foot one leggers.
This weak fresh rebuilt tranny, now in the Firebird, can go behind my 211,500 S-10 Blazer engine. This Firebird gets a fresh rebuilt Hi Po tranny and poly mount!
