T5-Rear seal replacement?
T5-Rear seal replacement?
Hi all, I have an 83 TA with a T5. Tranny seems to be fine but has a nasty leak, which I think is the rear seal. My question is: How difficult is this to change? Do I need any special tools? I've called a few tranny shops in the area and was given a $60-$90 price range. Problem is they seem to be backed up for a while. I could wait and keep cleaning up the fluid or give it a shot myself...
Thanks,
TA76

It's extremely easy.
I just paid a shop $30 to change both the seal and the bushing in my T-5 a couple of weeks ago. They even had the tool to pull the bushing with the trans still assembled. It took them less than 15 minutes. It will take longer to put the car onto and off the rack, and top it off with fluid, than it will to actually change the seal. I think you're getting reamed.

RB83L69, thanks again for the help! I should just email you directly.
If you ever pass through Birmingham Alabama let me know I owe you a steak dinner!
Anyway, back to the topic:
If you think I was getting nailed at $60-$90, the shop I was gonna take it to said that if they had to replace the bushing it might be as high as $200. Hell, I didn't know any better I would have paid it. I think I'll shop around a bit now.
Thanks again,

I used to go through B'ham from time to time; I lived in Memphis, I had 2 brothers living in Huntsville; we would go to Talladega sometimes, etc.
Call around to all the trans shops, especially ones that aren't the big chains; ask them if they have the tool to change the bushing. I'd bet that if your seal is leaking you need the bushing too.
Or, if you just want to swap the seal yourself, just go buy one and do it. All you have to do is pull the driveshaft, after that it's as easy as a wheel bearing seal or something like that.
