Tranny Swap - Auto to 5-spd
I am in the process of swapping a T-5 for my 700-R4 and have a question. The T-5 is out of a Firebird and has the electric speedo sensor on the transmission.
My question is, what do I need to do to attach my speedo cable to the transmission? Would the parts from the 700R4 work on the T-5? Also, for any parts I may need, do you have any part numbers?
Any help or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance for the help.

Jagsthatrun.com has what you need for the cable speedometer and to be able to send the VSS signal to the ECM. The sending units that fit in the T-5 will not work with the automatic.......other than that do a search for the swap on this board.

Thanks for the info, however I am looking to go in the other direction. The transmission has the electronic VSS and I am looking to attach a speedo cable to the transmission. Is it as simple as installing new speedometer gear parts or is there something different about this transmission? Where could I get these parts used?

You just need the speedo gear housing, and the correct speedo gear(s) for your situation. The housing is available from the dealer. People say certain of the gears are not, I don't know about that. The gears you would need depend on what rear end gears you've got.

If you have access to a local pull your own parts junkyard, mechanical speedo drives are available all day long. The VSS electronic ones are the hard to find ones. Just swap in a mechanical drive speedo unit. And sell the VSS, there is a big market for used VSS drives.

Thanks for the info. I'll look around for one. Is it the same for all T-5's?
Also, what speedo gears do I need for a 2.77 (9-bolt) rear end? Does anyone have part #'s or are they similar to the 700R4? It looks like the drive gear on the T-5 is purple (could be a shade of gray but looks more like a deep purple) and the driven gear is red. (Rear tires are 245/50 ZR16) Also how do I swap the drive gear? Does the tailhousing have to come off of the T-5? I have never been in that territory before.
Sorry for all the questions, I'm just desperate to get this done while the tranny is out of the car but am eager to get my car back on the road. Thanks for the help.

You can probably find a driven gear close enough, but if not and you need to change the drive gear, yes the tail of the trans must come off.
Here is a chart of approximate gear combos for your car:
With 2.77:1 gears and 245/50-16 rear tires (25.65" tall),
8T Drive and 19T Driven Gears are the closest match
Your Drive gear / Driven Gear Ratio is: 0.459
