4th gen 5-speed tranny

what kind of tranny did the 4th gens have? i know the auto was 700r-4, and the 6-speed was the t-56, but what about the 5 speeds in the 6 cylinders. how strong are these 5 speeds? could i replace a 700r-4 in a 3rd gen with this tranny? direct fit? same size as the 700r-4?

Re: 4th gen 5-speed tranny

If you want a manual 5-speed, why not just use a 3rd gen V8 T5?

I'd be concerned about a tranny designed for a V6, being put behind a V8.

You'll have the same problem as trying to put a thirdgen V6 T5 behind a V8. Its not recommended due to the differences and the weakness of the tranny. this forum for the info.

Re: 4th gen 5-speed tranny

well strength was my whole issue. i have no idea about the strengthness of the v-6 5 speed thats why i asked. i know that the t-5 in a nutshell is pretty much as strong as using string as a tow strapso thats why i asked. what is the model number of the 5 speed trans?

Re: 4th gen 5-speed tranny

it's a T5, but the 4th gens used the Ford input shaft setup. Weird, huh? But true.

Further, there are no cheap, strong manual transmissions for us. In fact, transmissions are the biggest problem for any V8 third gen.

its wierd the harder thing to make (auto trans) seems to be a lot better than the easier thing to make (t-5 trans).

FWIW.......
Despite GM not putting T5s behind the 350s, I've plenty of people who have swapped WC T5s in behind their 350s.....And the T5s survived without problems.

well you mostly need to just upgrade to 28 spline and get an eaton differential and you're set right?

Sure does, just like most things, it'll last a long time until you start beating on it and abusing it by racing.
