Transmission End Play
Transmission End Play
I hear two clunks from the underside of my '91 Formula 350 whenever I go from Drive to reverse or reverse to drive. It sounds like one is right under the seat and one is farther towards the rear of the car. I pulled the drive shaft and the universal joints don't feel like they have any play. They pivot alright, not perfect. However I noticed that the splined shaft coming out of the rear of the transmission has quite a bit of play in it. Is this right? Its probably .06". Is this the source of my clunk or can the U-joints be casuing all that noise? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Check your tranny mount. Stick a prybar or breaker bar in between the x-member and trans and see if you could lift it off the mount.
