Which governor for lower gear ratio

Does anyone know the proper governor used for a 700R-4 and 3.42 gears and 350 engine? I recently bought a governor specified for a 1990 GTA L98 5500 rpm redline but it downshifts too easily. I really wanted to replace the old 305 4800 governor. The tranny already has a GM Upshift kit and it works fine also the TV cable is properly adjusted and the cable is new.

The outer weights on the new governor are much lighter than the old governor. Also, the springs are easier to compress than the old governor. As I was looking through the arcives, I remember reading someone said to "replace the smaller or inner weights only"

Any help is appreciated.

Ed

The lightest inner weights GM produced look square on the bottom with the corners cut off. sort of A shaped.
You can modify your own by carefully grinding them.
The weights effect the wot shift points and the springs have more effect on shift points at lower speeds.

Thanks Jay

Ok, so the inner weights control the wot shift points. I understand the kit sold by B&M replaces the inner weights and springs and fits turbo 350s, 400s and 700R4s.

Now would you suggest I recalibrate my stock governor with the outer heavy weights and 1/2" hole? Or should I recalibrate the new governor that I just bought from the dealer specified for a 1990 5.7 L98 GTA which has very light outerweights (same shape but some material cut out)? What are there differences in the outer weights? Is it just GM's way of calibrating the governor?

thanks
Ed

If the old governor is in good shape, put it back in, this will solve the problem. Otherwise change the weights to the same as the original one.
