clunking sound on deceleration

clunking sound on deceleration

when I decelerate , at about 7 mph or so the tranny downshifts and it clunks , what could be causing this? 89 RS LO3 A/T

If it is happening while in the D3 position this is normal for a stock 700. You are feeling a bindup on the 3-2 shift.

I know you can feel the shift, but it sounds like too loud of a clunk to be healthy, I wonder if it could be u joints, I did check them and they seemed tight. Maybe it is normal but my 88 V6 doesn't do it as loudly??

Sure you could have a problem with a u-joint, etc. But I have noticed that this is more pronounced on F-bodies I suspect due to the torque arm.
