From what I understand it involves rebuilding the entire rearend. Removing C clips, axles, etc. That's why everyone wants a 9 inch Ford. All you have to do is change the entire assembly and go.

Changing out the entire rear axle unit is fairly easy.

Changing the carrier from open to limited slip is rather involved, requires special tools, and should probably only be done by someone who has been trained in the proper way of doing it.

Installing a PowerTrax conversion unit is a good way to go if you are happy with the gear ratio you have now. Can be installed with common hand tools, is about the same price as a posi carrier but no professional labor costs. It will make a clicking sound going around corners, but if your exhaust is loud enough or your stereo powerful enough, you won't notice it.

Changing the carrrier is not that involved. Aside from the diff cover, all you need to remove are a 4 bolts and the carrier comes right out. Its a whole lot easier than a gear swap or complete rebuild because you don't have to touch the pinion. If you do decide to do it, take not of the backlash and foot print of the gears, swap in the new carrier (remember the ring gear bolts are left hand thread!!!!) and preload the carrier (i can't remember the amount) Buy a differential rebuild book, that tells you all you need. Its a lot less scary than you actually think, just remember to take your time and double check all dimensions.
