For some reason, my shifter seems to be broken. I went to put it in reverse pulling out of a friends driveway, and it stayed in park. The shifter handle moved, and indicated reverse, but did not engage the gear. If I pull the shifter back a gear (into Neutral), then move it up into Reverse again, the tranny shifts into reverse. I can get into every gear, but I have to play with the stupid thing to get it there. Does this sound like a broken shifter, or could it be something with the tranny? Please tell me its the shifter! If it is the shifter, can I just rip one out of any thirdgen automatic, or do I have to look for specific years? (I have a 92 RS, 305 TBI)Thanks guys.

 

could be that it is just out of adjustment. Try going under the car and unbolt the linkage move the shifter in to neutral and manual shift tranny into neutral then retighten linkage.
If that doesn't work it could be the shifter or the tranny itself.
