bent axle
bent axle
I just bought a complete rearend off and auto wreckers for a great price, but it seems to have a bent axle on the one side. The axle only has like .050 runout, is this really bad??? could i still drive with no probs like this or will something break?? the other question i have is if i get the face of the axle turned down to make it perpendicular to the axle shaft will it be fine??? if anyone can help please do

.050" is pretty bad. That will translate to over ¼" at the tire tread.
It probably won't cause anything to "break", depending of course on how it got bent in the first place. Bent axles are more common than most people realize. They usually get that way from hitting curbs. You can even toast one in the drive-thru if you hit it right.
What it will do is make the car have a wheel vibe. How much of one, and whether that matters to you, is another matter. But changing an axle is about a 20-minute procedure, no big deal at all, so if you go ahead and install it as is and then discover it's unacceptable, you're not out that much to deal with it. The buzzard you got it from might even warranty it.
I think you'd probably spend more machining it than you would if you had to buy another one. That's not the answer.
