Is a turbo 400 worth it?
Is a turbo 400 worth it?
I have a turbo 400 that came with my 84z when I bought it at the used lot. Mechanics say that tranny shouldn't fit. I'm a standard guy, and would love to do the swap from the three speed auto to a four or five speed stick, but everyone tells me to keep the 400. Is it really worth it? Do I really not have enough hp from my v8 to run it? And why do I top out it's third gear at 70 mph? Give me some ideas.

Topping out third gear at 70 mph? That's as fast as the car can go? You must have something like 5.13 gears in the rear end and a red line of 4000 rpm.
The TH400 will fit but it's a tight squeeze. If it's a TH400 then someone has swapped out the old 700R4 and put that one in. No third gens came with a TH400. The TH400 is a heavy tranny that can take more abuse than a TH350 or 700R4 but it's not really required for a low HP car. My race car only uses a TH350.
