Help me decide on a trans for my 383 car.
Help me decide on a trans for my 383 car.
Hi, im pretty new to the site and am mainly a mud truck guy, but i have picked up a beautyful 1992 RS with a blown motor recently that i am trying to get on the street and strip. I have already made a 6-pt cage for the car and also am removing my 383 from my mud truck and am going to use that motor in the car. It makes about 450hp on 93 octane and on top of that i am spraying it with a 150shot on RARE occasion. My perdicament is, i cannot decide what trans to run in the car. I MUST have overdrive! I am running a 4-series gear in the rear (prolly 4.30's) and i plan on crusing this car up to ocean city and back many times in the summer. I am torn between a Built 700r4/4l60 or a t-56. As far as cost goes, how much more would a built t-56 swap be (its originaly a 700r4 car) as apposed to a manual valve body, 3500 stall 700r4 built to hold the motor and the spray? Which will hold the power and hold up better? Which will do better in the quater mile? I do not thrash and hammer on my cars and trucks every day. I drive them very gingerly however i do let them eat every now and than and i do plan on running this car at the track on the weekends. Just need some input from some car guys because as stated before, this is my first car, Im a 4wheelin/pickup truck kind of guy

good stock T56 can handle 450hp and occassional spray. Just need a decent clutch.
700r4 is about 1000 bucks to rebuild for that level so its reliable.
Why 4.30 gears? what tire and what is your peak hp rpm on that 383?

The Automatic will perform better at the track with the proper stall. The T56 will increase the fun-factor. Where are you located? (Ocean City?)
Are you changing out the rear also? The Automatic will be kinder to the rear, while a T56 and sticky clutch will hit it hard.
(I've got a Viper-spec T56 already built and ready to roll, if you're interested)

if you do T56 and that motor peaks at 7200 rpm which is very high, then 4.30 gears are a must with any tire, from 26 inch on up i'd say.
