305 tbi+th700r4+3.42=gas milage?

I need new gears and posi for my car, badly. currently I have a peg leg 2.73. I want 3.42, but am worried about gas mileage (college). Right now i normally get 18 mpg (almost always stay under 2 grand) pretty steadily thanks to some of my beginner mods. If the 3.42s get crappy mileage I'll probably get 3.23s. thanks for your help.

In overdrive cruising at 40-50 MPH the difference in RPMs is relatively small (maybe 200 RPM) and your mileage won't be compromised that much, if at all. While the RPM is increased the load is decreased, so you won't have to give it as much throttle.

From what I've heard 3:42's are you're best all around gears, they help your acceleration and are not too harsh on gas. I would guess your gas milage wouldn't drop below 16. But there are many variable that could come into play.

That is what I run. Went from 2.73 peg leg to 3.42 and Zexel Posi. My car got great gas mileage before. Averaging 20 in town and 31 on the highway. Now with all my listed mods in signature I get 18 in town and 25 on highway. I do have a MUCH better launch than I did before. Still slow though. Need more HP. I just don't have $4000 to do it the way I want yet.
