TV Cable settings based upon line pressures
TV Cable settings based upon line pressures
OK....the new trans has finally arrived. Now I am trying to find a (competent) transmission shop that is also near me to install it. One place I called told me they set the TV cable by monitoring the line pressure(s). From the brief discussion over the phone with this shop they claim it adds about 1 to 1.5 extra labor hours to the total install. I was told a pressure gauge or gauges are hooked up to the line taps on the case and the car is driven while monitoring the gauges and adjusting the TV cable(between road tests) until the correct pressures are reached. My question is......Is it necessary? Is it worth the extra $$ because of the time it takes? The guy I talked to said it's the most accurate way to set the TV......which makes sense. Should it take that long to set though? Also.....after talking to him on the phone I started to wonder how in the hell they can drive the car and monitor the pressures....kind of dangerous IMO! LOL! Maybe two people are involved...driver and monitor. Also.....how do they get the lines from the guages to the taps on the trans....while the car is being driven? Run em out the window? Maybe I misunderstood and they prop up the rear end and 'test drive' it in place. ?????
If someone can shed some light on such a procedure I would like to know. ProBuilt 89ProchargedRoc? Transfixleo?
Thanks!
Mike
Forgot to mention the transmission is a 700R-4

Actually I drove around for @ 4months with a gauge hanging off of a '77 Monte of mine that I had converted to a 700 back when shops were still going the other way (putting 350's in their place)!
In my opinion they have showed their hand as a BAD shop and here is why. Just ask them this: "So you are saying that I have to pay EXTRA for you to hook up a gauge (whether it is to set the TV or check tranny doesn't matter)? Everyone knows that it is just plain part of the job, along with PROPERLY setting the TV, no matter what method you use".
Now feel free to go ahead and use my method for setting the TV. The gauge will check/verify that all is working as it should.
PS: PLEASE ask them just as I wrote and reply with their response (stuttering and mumbling included).

I was always told to just pull the tv cable all the way towards the firewall and release and get in and mash the gas pedal to the floor (with the engine off of course) and it will adjust itself... that's how mine is set and seems to shift pretty good..

I don't think it's necessary to do all that with the gauges, if your throttle lever originally was set up for a 700 then you're ok, if it's a holley or edelbrock carb get an adapter to achieve the proper pull ratio. Then, with the engine off, have someone hold the throttle wide open and adjust the cable so it's all the way out at wot. This is what I would do anyway.
