Good accelaration in 2nd,lousy in drive

Good accelaration in 2nd,lousy in drive
If I am just going down the street around 30 miles on hour and my car is in 2nd and nail it it picks up instantly but when I shift it to drive there is a long hesitation is this normal? Is there anything I can do about it? If I am in drive around 30 miles an hour and nail it there is a hesitation before it goes. Thanks for any info.
