whining

I've never posted on this board before, but I figure that my tranny is dying or something so I might as well. I have an 87 z28 with a 700r4, and whenever I let off the gas and slow down, I hear a loud whining sound. It is less noticable in overdrive, and Im not 100% sure the transmission is doing it, but I just figured it was. It sounds like its coming from below me when Im driving, so I really don't think its my rear end. Anyone else ever have this problem, and what was the cause?

it could be the rear end. l had the problem of a whining noise and a bit of grinding when l was driving my car. the problem was the backlash of the ring an pinion was off because the pinion moved a little in my car. the pinion was grinding against the diff case. it ground up the outside of it and did a little damage to the pinion. if l were you and you wanna save whatever it is thats whining, lay off of it. it'll only get worse. try changing your diff fluid. and check your trans fluid.

If it's definatly whining from the tranny suspect the pump. My v6 always did this at light throttle in 1st.

It only does it when I let off the gas. I really need to have someone listen from the back and see if it gets louder back there. Anyway, how hard is it to change the pump, or fix it?

Off hand it sounds more like a rear end problem. A plugged filter can cause a loud whine but it gets worse with throttle. See if it is a little better with it in Neutral as you coast as that takes a load off of the rear.
