Tremec 3550 questions

I've done as much research on the 700R4 to T56 or Tremec 5-speed conversions as I could, but still have a couple questions about the 5-speed:

1. Will the shifter fit in the stock 3rd-gen manual tranny console cover opening? (Appearances count)

2. Does it require a new torque arm/crossmember/shortened driveshaft/adapter like the "aftermarket" T56?

3. The 3.27 1st gear - is this practical for everyday driving (I have a 3.27:1 diff)? The 700R4, AM T56, and some T5s are around 3:1. Personally, I don't know if this makes a big diff.

As always, thanks in advance.

I have the Tremec TKO. Mine is an original 5-speed car though so it was a more direct replacement then the automatic. Check out www.Fortesparts.com.
The shifter needs a plate, about 2" long or so to place the shifter handle in the proper position, no real biggy. I have a hurst shifter & bolted this plate to the shifter & bolted the handle to the other end.
The Crossmember brackets required are basically 5/8" blocks that lower the trans crossmember b/c the Tremecs are taller transmissions. You do need a new driveshaft yoke which is supplied, everything else stays the same.
With the 3.27 gears in the rear, you should be ok, I'm running 3.73's and in daily driving usually start out in 2nd w/ no problem b/c 1st is so tight. I would think w/ your ratio, you'd be okay.
