Can anyone diagnose my 700R4?

I think it may be screwed but I want to see if anyone knows anything else first. When I shift (I shift manualy) into first at a light or a stop sign and then take off it goes. as soon as I let off the gas the car seems to go into neutral. The car does not stay torqued up. I hit the gas and the car revs for like a half a second and then takes off with a jerk. It is like as soon as I let off the gas the car has a 4000 stall converter in it. Could the converter be gone or is my trany slipping and screwed beyond belief? I have checked the fluid and it is ok. it is just slightly gray though. If anyone has any thoughts can you please let me know? Thanks guys.

Eric

Slightly grey sounds like the converter is common apart. When it revs up does it bang back into gear? If so, suspect the input sprag. The Forwards could also be going out too. A sticky Throttle valve cou be causing a slip too (common problem, TransGo Fixes this).

OK. What is the sprag and what exactly is involved in fixing it? Does the tranny have to come out? Is this costly? Is it someting that I can fix on my own? Thanks guys.

The sprag is in the Front drum. Yes the tranny has to come out and No don't even try it. Let someone that is experanced do it. Can't really tell you what the sprag does, I just know what will happen if it brakes.

Sprag is a one way clutch, sort of like a ratchet. This is a high wear item that should be replaced during O/H. It's job is to pass power threugh during acceleration in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. It overruns in 4th and during coast in O/D position. I recommend changing over to the complete 4L60E Sprag assy. for maximum durability.

That would explain why it only does it in 1-2-3 and not 4. How much did it cost you guys to get it replaced and how long did they have it? Just wondered. This is my ONLY car.

My old one did the same thing in 1,2, and 3. Not 4th. I rebuilt it and the 1-2 shift valve was stuck. You will have to drop your valve body and take out all the valves and clean it all with parts cleaner. You will know which one it is when you have a hard time getting it out.
But you would be better off just take the whole tranny apart and clean it up,and install a basic rebiuld kit. Bad thing is that the torque convertor for a 700 can not be flushed, so you would have to replace it if you don't want crap to get back into your tranny.

So then you do not think that it is the forward sprag then? I took it to the shop and the dude there said that there is nothing wrong with it. He said that they all do it (of cource they don't) and would not even look anymore. He said that the fluid is fine and is not grey like i thought. It just goes in to a "neutral" mode when I let off the throttle. The tranny is only a couple of years old and has already been re-built for racing. I suppose it would not hurt to flush the fluid and stuff. I have never had it apart. All I have to do is drop the pan and the valve body comes right out with a couple of bolts right? If i do al;l this and it does not work then I just wasted time and money on fluid and a filter kit and will have to re-do it all again if it is the sprag correct? Again this is hte only car that I have and only have a VERY limited budget.

I wouldn't say its not the forward sprag. Mine just happened to be the shift valve. The 700 is a complicated tranny, its not something you should tackle yourself. There is alot of small parts in there, and if you forget to put one in (like spring or check ball) the tranny will not work right. Then your back to square one, trying to find out what went wrong. It sucks, I experienced it on my first 700 rebiuld. Its not fun at all.
So save some money up and take it to someone who really knows 700s, their more difficult than a 350 or 400. I can practically do a 350 or 400 with my eyes closed after doing a couple 700s.

It is certainly a pain in the butt. The only problem that I am having is no one here knows JACK about a 700R4. And I definatley know nothing about tranny's (yet) It is starting to whine now. Fluid is still good. we'll see.
