Some info on the dredded B/W 9 bolt.......

Well i just did my swap from a 89 2.77, to a 87 3.27. As i took the 3.27 apart i learned alot. Here are some of the numbers i found. the axles are 28 spline. It is has full length 1 5/16 inch shaft to where the splines enter the posi where it tapers to 1 1/8 inch. The 10 bolt , (which i had one next to it) has 1 1/8 inch shaft tapered to 1 1/16 in the posi. HMMMMMMMM. No C-Clips, tapered bearings, and a cone (rebuildable) posi, why would you not want to keep this rear. I agree 2.77 bite, but with good tires i could have been looking at 14.1 at 98.8 with that those gears. Now i have my $200.00 3.27 and i couldn't be happier. Well to each Their own. The Shaggy Iroc

Yep, I found the same things when I did my 91 10-bolt to 89 9-bolt swap. I hope you put the 89's brakes on the 87 rear end. Or did you put the 87's internals into the 89 rear end?

yep, i kept the brakes, 11.65" PBR. I just yanked the axles out and swapped backing plates. Then threw my calipers on. I did the whole swap in 5 hrs, but then i can pull the rear in 30 minutes. Wow, gotta say I am shooting for 13.99 at the next TNT, with my drag tires of course

While the B/W setup is stronger it is also much more expensive to fix and is very finicky.

I will gladly trade my B/W setup (3.27 with new calipers, cables, hoses, and rotors) to anyone with a posi drum setup.

Question for ya, my understanding is that the cone posi is NOT rebuildable, and that the whole carrier needs to be replaced as a unit.

Do you have access to parts for a rebuild? Please share.

Thanks, I have that info, but you realize that's just doctoring it up and once the cone is gone, you'll need a new carrier?

You had my hopes up for a minute

Well, you can shim the cone BUT if the cone s have eaten into the case - it's time for a whole new carrier.
GM isn't carrying carrier halves or cones anymore (if they ever did I dunno) - just the whole carrier. $1033 list. $619 on GM parts direct.
