T5 clutch is shot - Trans shot too??

Hey guys. Long background with this... sorry.

Well the clutch is total crap and I think it just bit it for good today. It's been my only car and I've had no time at all to take on the task of replacing all the clutch items, and I know that the TO has been shot for a while. Rough engagement when starting or easing into another gear. Also, the slave/master assembly needs to get replaced. The slave flexes bad when engaged and only gives just over 11mm of movement... and from what I've read 14 is the minimum. I just measured the slave's travel today when it finally broke down.

It broke down when I was driving on the highway... cruising in 80 degree weather for 30 minutes or so. I took an exit, and took it out of fifth, but it wouldn't go into any other gear. It would try to grind. So now... whether the car is running or stopped, it won't shift into gears. It has free movement all around but will not go into gear.

I kept driving it like this because it would still shift totally smooth when driving. The only gear where you could ever get any shake from the clutch would be spirited or easing into third or second. If everything was done smoothly though, the synchros never had any complaints and it shifted smooth and flawless.

So my question is... what is it that could have gone SO shot on the clutch assembly that is making it so that it can't even shift into any gear at all now?? There was no indication of it going and completely breaking. Yes the clutch was well on it's way out... but still never had even a bit of difficulty shifting.

Also... the trans had been a bit low on ATF. Probably not dry... but it had been leaking some. Again though... I figured that it'd show signs of going dry. Not wanting to shift... something. Everything was working as it has been consistently for months now until today it just stopped.

Ideas?? Please?

okay... to get to the big question. Is there something about the way that the clutch went out which would prevent it from being able to just shift into gear under ANY circumstance - running or not - or should I be looking into a potentially dead trans too?

No I didn't really keep trying to shove it into gear - once it wouldn't let me shift in easily and was trying to grind, I stopped trying. It's a bummer though... everyone has the clutch kit I want back ordered until the 15th...

Well... since I hate running across old threads that were never resolved when I'm searching... I figured I'd resolve this one here...

Clutch was shot, but it would still try to disengage... and COULD have... if the trans wasn't messed up. I haven't opened it up yet to see what exactly the issue is, but I believe it's hung up on a gear in there. You can't rotate the input and tail shaft independently of each other at all, and if you try to put it in a gear, no shafts will rotate at all. Input shaft is bent... etc... it's a mess.

So... more than just the clutch
