700R4 question, which I'm sure some of you are SICK of...

I have an '86 Firebird with a 700R4 and love that tranny. Anyway, I'm looking a new engine in my car, replacing the tired 305. The new engine will make around 350-400 HP and about the same torque. Can my tranny handle that? Also, I was thinking about ripping out my computer when I put in my new engine, so how much does the computer control my trans.? What will I have to do to make it work without the computer, assuming the computer does do something for the tranny? Any help is much appreciated!

Computer controls torque converter lockup only. If your transmission has not had the updates, or any other performance modifications done recently, then a performance buildup is what you will need! What type of driving are you planning on doing? weekend warrior? road racing? street/strip?, what rear end gear ratio are you using?, what is the duration of the camshaft at .050 lift?, etc. This will have a lot to do on determinig which torque converter to use (which stall & lockup or non-lockup)?, and what modifications are to be done as far as shift firmness. If I can be of help? Let me know. 800 7763288 Mon-Sat 11-7 PST, email me at probuilt1@earthlink.net or poet it.
Glad Too Help!!!
