Hey all i have an 82 Z28 with a 4 speed and the linkage on the bottom of the shifter has broken. it's the one that shifts 3&4 and i cant get a shifter anywhere. is this a common problem with this tranny? and will it happen again if i can find an aftermarket shifter. i am also going to be replacing the bushings when i do this.

Re: shifter linkage
Not sure about replacement parts for the factory shifter. Probably a used deal only as I can only imagine any factory stuff has been discontinued.

I had a Hurst (for the Super T10) in mine for years and aside from replacing the bushings every two years I beat the hell out of it and never had a problem.

Re: shifter linkage
The factory shifter is long and sloppy.
I agree, a hurst super-comp shifter (like I have for my T-10) is an excellent upgrade. About $200 IIRC.

Re: shifter linkage
thanks guys. i bought a hurst shifter for the car and then found out that i need a conversion linkage that isn't being made anymore. i found a new in box linkage on ebay and bought it so i should have the correct linkage for the hurst shifter by friday.

and you are correct on the the factory replacement being discontinued. i couldn't even get the bushings for it at the dealership.

Re: shifter linkage
Torque Tube? No 3rdgen has ever had a torque tube.... do you mean a torque arm? If so, yes you do have a torque arm. And if your trans has an aluminum case, then it is the T10.

If its iron, then yes its a Saginaw trans. The T10 has an aluminum case. They both use a different shifter and rods as far as I know.
