Transmission storage.. what happens when they sit for long periods of time?

I have an 87 700 that has been sitting in storage for about 2 - 3 years with no use. I am considering installing it for a friend, but I am concerned with what happens over time to the seals and bands etc with no fluid getting to them on a regular basis.
The trans was perfect when removed from the car.. no problems at all. Since then it has just sat in the garage. Should this be rebuilt first, or would it be ok to install as is, with new fluid and filter? What, if any, are the potential problems?

i'd change the front and rear seals and the filter and gasket. if you can i'd sit it so all the old fluid could drain out and refill it with fresh fluid. other wise i don't think you'll have any problems, i've used transmissions that have sat for a while.

about the only thing that i could think of is possible moisture being absorbed by the fluid if the trans sat with fluid in it. if no fluid in the unit during storage possible rusted internal hardware replace the front and rear seals. and fill with clean fluid advise to remove the pan to inspect for possible moisture witness marks in the pan that would possible show up as rust ring on the pan or pink foamy fluid

Hm.. is there any way to store a transmission for a long period of time without having to do the seals later? As in, draining all the fluid, or putting it in a large zip-lock bag?

make sure that the trans has fresh fluid and make sure all the holes out put shaft cooler line fittings and the filler tube hole are all plugged. the biggest thing is to make sure that no moisture can enter and be absorbed by the fluid

Ive heard of people having problems with seals leaking because they get brittle.Ive heard that by adding a 1/4 cup of brake fluid and running it for a couple of days will sofen the seals. But you must change fluid after a couple of days to prevent the seals from turning to slush.
