There is a tag they stick on, it's white with green printing. You can decode the numbers and tell about the year, but I have no idea how, nor do I see any value in doing that since there are no year-to-year changes, so I have never bothered to find out how...
The 1st design T-5 has straight roller bearings on the countergear, and all brass synchro blocking rings. The 2nd design "World Class" has tapered rollers on the countergear, composition blocking rings on 2nd and 1st (why?!?!?) gears, and needle rollers between the intermediate gears and the mainshaft for reduced friction. Externally they are identical in size and bolt locations and all that, so they are totally interchangeable without any other changes being required.
You can tell them apart easily from outside the case, even while they are installed in the car. Look at the front countergear bearing, which is in the front surface of the case where it sits against the bell housing; the bearing is to the pass side of center near the bottom, about 1/3 of it is exposed below the BH. The 1st design bearing is flat and very shiny, with its edge rolled over, such that it looks like an upside-down freeze plug. The 2nd design bearing has a dull finish, and has its center depressed; it looks almost like it has a ridge about 3/16" wide all the way around it. It has sharp edges that don't look rolled over at all.
