Re: 3:73 gears???
If you already have a limited slip differential then you can get the thick 3.73 gears that work on the 2 series that you have now. If you have a standard differential then I recommend that you get a new 3 series Eaton Posi and the standard 3.73 gears. You will need a good installation kit. I have some recommendations for that too. What year is the car? If it is '89 or older then it will have 26 spline axles. If it is '90 or newer then it will have 28 spline axles. Yu must know this before ordering a differential. If the axles are worn then I recommend upgrading to 28 spline axles if you have 26 splines now.

Re: 3:73 gears???
Honestly at this point you probably need axels too. I've yet to see a set in a car or truck or this vintage that weren't wasted on the bearing and seal surfaces. Given that get the 28 spline stuff. It's the strongest stuff available for the 7.5/7.625" 10 bolt.
You need a full install kit (bearings, races, seals, crush collar, pinion nut, and shims), a gearset, and more than likely axels. Even if you have a posi unit stock it may be wasted. The GM units are better than the ones Ford used, but that isn't really much of a compliment. I'd just step up to an Eaton or Yukon posi unit. I'd also recommend ditching the crush sleeve and installing a solid spacer. If you go this far it might as well be done right.
If you plan to hammer on the car I'd also highly recommend a set of studs for the caps and a TA cover/girdle.

Re: 3:73 gears???
No, and no shop I'd use would let you reuse your old bearings even if they could manage to get them off the old gears, which is unlikely. Don't kid yourself. You'll have an easy $650 to $1,000 tied up in a job like this if it's done right.
Re: 3:73 gears???
I dropped about $1200 putting a 3.73 rear end in my car last year. I didn't think my skills were up to the challenge. Since I've never done rear end before I figured it was best to pay to have everything done right and replace all bearings and seals while in the back. Don't skimp on anything.
Re: 3:73 gears???
You need to rethink this project and if you continue. Start with these suggestions:
1) Research
2) Money, about $1200 Min.
3) Good shop & labor est.
4) List of parts the shop requires.
5) shop for parts
6) NO Richmound Gears (research why).
7) set a timeframe for work completion.
There may be some things I may have left out but this is a start.

Re: 3:73 gears???
I picked up the gears, install kit, kept the axles but replaced all bearings and seals, new diff cover, and speedo gears. That plus labor and I dropped off the car for about a week. It didn't take that long, but I have another car.
