Axle pinion locks up and I thought it ruined the tranny...

I was cruising about 30 mph when I heard and felt a jolt like something getting snapped. The jeep (with 350 TPI and 700r4) kept running just idled. I got out and pushed the jeep forward and the driveshaft didn't move so I know the axle was seized. Turned it off and trailered it home. I took the driveshaft off and the axle was completely siezed up. So now I'm worried I broke something in the Transmission or transfer case. Started the engine and 1st and 2nd seem to be really hard to get the yoke spinning and reverse spins instantly. I pulled the transmission and completely disassembled it and couldn't find a problem, I thought it snapped the output shaft. I checked the transfer case and everything seems good. My question is what could have blown do to the axle locking up (i think the pinion fell down to far but I'm not digging in that yet) and the transmission being in drive. There was no bogging down when it hit, it was like, and if anyone has ever had a 4x4 seemed like the transfercase slammed into nuetral. but it wasn't.

The cross shaft probably came loose and slipped out of it's bore in the differential. This will lock the rear end up instantly, and usually do some pretty good damage.
