Rebuilding a 700R4

How difficult is it to rebuild a 1985 700R4?
Are there any good books available?

If I were you I would find a good trans shop. There are several versions of the 4L60(700R-4) in use. And, there are specific repair procedures for each one. I believe yours is an 85, so there are some good mods to be done. The 88 and up,I believe have most of the factory improvements such as the auxiliary valve body and improved lubrication to the 3-4 clutch pack. Haynes auto books have a good one on the late GM automatics, however they are not specific enough to keep you out of trouble. One tiny mistake and you will fry the rebuild. I have done a couple of turbo 400's but have seen work done on the 4L60 and you really need to be familiar with the version you have to do a successful overhaul. If you are going to attempt an overhaul yourself I would get an original GM service manual for the box you have. As is with any trans overhaul, do not skimp and replace everything. Torque specs are critical and you will need a few special tools. As I said, when all is said and done you will be better off finding a performance shop who can steer you to a good trans guy. Most guys who race as I once did will know a local GM trans guru who will know what to do. Good Luck, Dan

I just got done rebuiling mine last night and let me tell you if you have never been inside one don't attempt it your self, my dad helped me he was a mechanic for 25 years and it was his first 700r4. I had a book from atsg(automatic transmission service group) they have a website not sure of the address but it can be looked up and it is very detailed but still I would have never got it done without pops there. It shifts tight and everything works great. I would also inquire about the kit you get because I had some stuff left over, probably due to the fact that it covered 87-92 years but we never saw the parts and let me stress the fact that you need to change the bushings which is in a different kit and not to mention the tools you need to change those. If you are going to do it right do it right, you will be amazed when you drive it!!
